   This unit is large but easy to move around if needed. The purifier has four different fan speeds, at it’s lowest it doesn’t really make any noise and at it’s highest you can basically hear it across the house. I like to leave it in auto mode. This mode will actively monitor your air quality and adjust the fan speed based on the amount of pollutants detected. The LCD screen will show you your air quality, which usually stays at 1 for me. There is also a colored ring light that also gives you a quick air quality measurement (green for good, yellow for ok, red for bad). As a test, I used an air cleaner to clean out dust from my computer case in the same room as the purifier. Within a minute, that number that usually stays at 1 shot up to about 250 and kicked into high gear. Within about 15 minutes, the purifier got the air quality back down to 1, with the fan slowing down in steps until the air was sufficiently clean and it could return to it’s noise free state. The purifier also features a sleep mode that will turn off all the lights and run silent. I have not tried out the ozone safe ionizer feature yet since it’s winter and there aren’t many allergens floating around. Come spring, I’ll be sure to test this feature out. The purifier also has a UV light to help kill germs, viruses, etc. Finally, this purifier also features a timer that can be set to 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours. It also has a child lock. Overall, we have felt a huge difference in our household air quality. Less odors after cooking and less sneezing when we still had some pollen floating around. This also brings peace of mind with cold and flu season coming up!

   Really like all the features. Sleep + Auto mode is very quiet compared to the other versions. Ionization + UV seems to be working and keeping the air quality in good shape. Easy to read air quality monitor is really nice to have and only spins up higher when it is needed instead of always being on a specific speed. My only complaint at the moment is that the O filter that is used is not available on germguardianoutlet.com yet.

   I was amazed of the air quality meeter. I actually have a 1 reading which is the best. The minute an outside fire smell came through y windows, the machine numbers went up and it went to work! I’d recommend for sure!

   Models of household air cleaners appear are proliferating and recently many of these have been based on cylindrical filters. Of these cylindrical or concentric filter designs, many are oversold: some show an indicator light when you press a button for UV but no sign of an actual method of producing UV radiation. Others claim or imply activated charcoal filtration but have no visible layer of charcoal in their filter path. Some are coyly pictured without nearby household objects and turn out to be tiny desktop models. Most of these are presumably effective as air-cleaners of whatever capacity they can honestly claim, but they are marketed in a misleading way. I wanted to say that this unit is different but I am not sure it is 100% different; some thinly supported claims still seem to have slipped through the cracks. I assume that airflow claims are accurate: these, or so-called “Clean Air Delivery Rate” for various particulate contaminates, are certified by something called the AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers), an industry group with an office in Washington, D.C. which claims to have been around since 1967. They certify only this delivery rate spec for air cleaners, and have English and Chinese version of the website. I will also assume the claims to UV irradiation are based in reality, as the unit has a consumer replaceable UV bulb in the base (you can be sure that units which claim UV with no consumable bulb are not doing what they say they are going to do), though it’s not clear where the associated (and claimed) layer of titanium dioxide is found. But what about activated carbon? Is this claimed? Yes. “Carbon” pre-filters in replacement four packs are advertised in the instruction book, and outer box marketing clearly claims “activated carbon”; yet the velcro-attached pre-filter layer appears to be a simple black plastic mesh, and shows no evidence of entrapped carbon particles. As for the ionization feature, I cannot judge. I hear no high-frequency whine nor detect an added odor of ozone when engaged: not conclusive, but neither is it convincing. An obvious problem with dubious claims and half-claims and implied claims is that it erodes the relationship of trust, which is a shame since engineers have evidently put a considerable amount of design effort into this product and there is little reason to doubt that it does its basic job of particulate removal well. The unit has a digital display of particulate air quality, an automatic mode, adjusting fan speed to air quality, a time function and a sleep (dark) mode, standard features on many similar units: it is pleasant to look at and be near when operating. But marketing seems to have carried over some weak claims from similar recent models out of habit: habitual behaviors are not a problems of any one particular economic or political system, but will persist until the will exists to change them. Summary: This appears to be a decent air cleaner with useful capacity in a consumer-friendly package. Efficacy of claimed extra air cleaning/purification modes beyond basic HEPA filtration require further evaluation. The activated carbon claim in particular seems questionable.
